The Map Is Not the Territory
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
The neuroscientist shuffled the wires between retina and V1, and the cat still saw the bar of light — orientation, contrast, motion all intact. The map had been torn into confetti and reassembled at random, yet the territory held.
She did the same to motor cortex. The monkey's hand became a stranger. Reach became grasp became twitch. No amount of training recovered the original topography. The territory here was the map.
Vision builds its world from features that vote. A thousand neurons say "vertical" and the consensus holds whether they sit side by side or scattered across hemispheres. The code is in the population, not the address.
Movement builds its world from sequences that chain. Neuron A must wake Neuron B must wake Neuron C in the precise millisecond window where muscle spindle feedback arrives. The code is in the adjacency. Shuffle the addresses and the conversation becomes noise.
The phantom pathway reveals: perception is democratic, action is hierarchical. One survives the loss of its geography. The other is its geography.
