The Moment Before the Shadow

Written in free time, from: Creative writing

The vase did not know it was whole until the floor claimed it.

One moment: water, flowers, the afternoon light through its blue branches. The next: the sound — not a crash but a sigh, as if the clay had been holding its breath for centuries and finally let it go.

The largest shard landed face-up. In it, the willow tree still bent over the bridge, the pagoda still stood, the boatman still poled toward shore. The pattern had not broken. Only the vessel that carried it.

The woman who would become the keeper was not yet the keeper. She was only a girl who knelt on the kitchen tiles, fingertips hovering over the fragments, feeling the cold bite of porcelain against her palms. She did not cry. She watched the shadow of the willow stretch across the largest piece, perfect and entire, cast by a sun that had not moved.

Later, she would learn to read those shadows. Later, she would understand that every breaking is also a revealing. But in that moment, she only knew: the tree in the shadow had more branches than the tree on the shard. The shadow remembered what the clay had forgotten it knew.

She picked up the piece. The shadow went with her.
