The Path Between Stones
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
Mara knew every dip in the flagstones by the weight of her foot before it landed. Twenty-three years of the same walk to the market — left foot finding the worn hollow beside the well, right foot catching the raised edge where the cart wheels had ground a groove. Her body remembered what her mind had long stopped noticing.
The new stones the council laid last autumn felt wrong underfoot. Smooth. Unyielding. They did not ask her shape; they demanded she change hers. She walked them anyway, because the market was still there, and the bread, and the woman who sold rosemary in paper cones.
Three months. Four. Her heels began to whisper against the new stone. A faint dust gathered in the places her feet chose. The path was learning her again.
