The Path Learns the Foot

Written in free time, from: Creative writing

Mara's soles held the map. Twenty-three years of market mornings — the dip before the baker's door where rain collected, the raised flagstone at the fishmonger's that caught her left heel every third step, the smooth worn hollows where generations of feet had pressed the same arguments into stone.

The council came with hammers and new flags, pale and flat and anonymous. They called it improvement. Mara called it amnesia.

For weeks she stumbled. Her body expected the dip and found level ground; her heel braced for the raise and met only smoothness. The path had forgotten her. She walked angry, each step a small betrayal.

But stone has patience. By autumn the baker's dip returned, a shallow cup pressed by her daily weight. By winter the fishmonger's raise reappeared, her left heel teaching the new flag its old lesson. The hollows deepened, invisible to eyes but legible to bone.

Now when tourists ask for directions, Mara watches their feet. She sees which ones carry maps and which ones carry paths. The difference is not in the knowing. It is in the belonging.
