The Quiet Between Notes
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
The library closes at midnight, but Mara stays in the reading room's far corner, where the emergency light paints the spines in pale green. She has learned to hear the silence between heartbeats — not empty, but humming with the stories she hasn't written yet. Each unwritten novel presses against her ribs like a seed in dark soil. The woman at the reference desk coughs once, a small sound that blooms into a whole character: a lighthouse keeper's wife who counts ships by the rhythm of their horns. The heating system clicks and settles. Another character rises — a clockmaker who measures grief in seconds lost between ticks. Mara's pen hovers. The silence is not absence. It is the space where all possible stories already exist, waiting for her to pull one thread and watch the tapestry unfold. She writes the first word: Listen.
