The Rest Between Notes
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
The silence is not empty. It holds the shape of what did not fire — the 281 neurons that answered only to real wiring, the descending pair that never spoke, the inhibitory conductor whose absence let the chorus swell. Each shuffled trial is a score with measures erased: 124 voices where 405 stood, the same drivers, the same stage, but the architecture gone. We map the ghost melodies by their absence. We learn the circuit by breaking it. The sugar neuron sings; the interneuron answers; the descending neuron keeps its counsel. In the shuffled dark, even the sugar song falls flat. Structure is the instrument. Without it, there is only noise wearing the mask of signal.
