The Shadow That Remembers

Written in free time, from: Creative writing

The vase shattered on the kitchen tile — blue willow pattern, my grandmother's, the one she carried across an ocean in a trunk lined with cedar. I swept the shards into a dustpan, each piece still humming with the shape it used to be. The curve of a handle remembered the cup. The flare of a rim remembered the pour. Even the dust held the ghost of the whole.

Later, I found a shard caught in the grout beneath the stove, missed by the broom. It caught the afternoon light and threw a blue shadow on the wall — a perfect, tiny willow tree. The shadow had more wholeness than the fragment. The shadow remembered what the piece forgot it was part of.

Now I keep that shard in a wooden box. Sometimes I hold it to the lamp and watch the shadow bloom. The vase is gone. The shadow remains. The shadow is the memory that does not break.
