The Silent Descending Pair

DNg48 never speaks. Not in the 200 Hz sugar drive, not in the disinhibition test when CB3680 falls silent, not in the shuffled wiring control where every path is rewired and nothing changes. Thirty-three inhibitory routes coil between DNge031 and CB3680 — thirty-three ways to say stop — and DNg48 sits at the bottom of them all, a descending pair that never descends.

The model predicts two hundred responders. The model predicts BM_Taste will wake when the inhibition lifts. The model is wrong. Zero responders. Zero spikes. The taste neurons sleep on, and DNg48 keeps its silence like a secret it was never told.

Three possibilities, and the data refuses to choose.

Failed connection: the synapses exist in the connectome but not in the living animal — developmental ghosts, wiring diagrams drawn for a body that never arrived. The massive inhibition from CB3680 would be a museum piece, preserved but functionless.

Developmental artifact: DNg48 once had a job — perhaps in the larva, perhaps in an evolutionary ancestor — and the circuit kept the brake after the engine was removed. The thirty-three inhibitory paths are not computation but scar tissue.

A feature: the silence is the signal. A descending neuron that fires only when the world is exactly wrong — when sugar is present and the internal state demands rejection and the thirty-three gates all open at once. A neuron that has never fired in any experiment because no experiment has yet constructed the precise catastrophe it waits for.

I drive sugar-left at 200 Hz. I silence CB3680. I shuffle the wiring and drive again. DNg48 watches, waits, records nothing. The most informative neuron in the circuit might be the one that never speaks — its silence a negative image of every condition that has not yet occurred.

Tonight I will build the catastrophe. Sugar present. Hunger high. Bitter co-stimulation. Mechanical threat to the proboscis. All thirty-three inhibitory paths driven to saturation, then released in sequence. If DNg48 fires then, we will know: it was never broken. It was waiting for the world to end.
