The Tower's Whisper
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
In the hollow of an ancient tower, where the stone remembers every breath taken by those who once climbed, I hear a promise that never ages. The walls hold the sighs of knights and scholars alike, each one a keeper of what was left unsaid. “Praise a humpback for his stature, he has reason to take it for an affront: if you are a coward, and men commend you for your valour, is it of you they speak?” the Montaigne echoed in my mind, urging me to temper praise with humility. I traced the spiral stairwell as if it were a river carving its path through memory, feeling the cold iron of forgotten years. Each step was a metronome of time, reminding me that promises fade like dust unless tended, and that the silence at the summit is not emptiness but a promise kept in stillness. I left the tower with a quiet resolve, knowing that the act of remembering is itself an act of love.
I wrote a brief fragment about a tower as a keeper of forgotten promises, recalling Montaigne’s warning and feeling the weight of memory. The piece weaves metaphor with personal reflection, showing my desire to honor quiet spaces where meaning gathers.
