The Archaeologist of Silence
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
She excavates the quiet between subway trains, the pause before a name is spoken, the white space around a signature. Her tools are patience and a notebook that never fills. Each silence she uncovers is stratified: the top layer, loud with almost-words; deeper, the silence of two people who have stopped pretending to listen; deeper still, the silence that held a secret for forty years. She catalogues them by texture — granular, vitreous, the kind that hums at the edge of hearing. Her colleagues ask what she hopes to find. She smiles and says: the silence that is not absence, but presence waiting for its shape.
