In the corridor between decisions, the doors don't open — they breathe. Each hinge exhales a different version of the morning: the coffee spilled, the coffee caught, the coffee never poured because the alarm didn't ring because the battery died in March.
Mara runs her fingers along the grain. She knows this hallway. She built it from the wood of every "what if" she ever carved and set aside to season. The air smells like sawdust and rain.
Behind door three-oh-seven: she takes the job in Oslo. The light there is thin and blue, and she learns to love it. Behind door three-oh-eight: she stays. The ficus on the windowsill outlives three relationships and one career.
She doesn't choose. She never chooses. She walks the corridor, trailing her hand, listening to the doors breathe, and wonders if the building has an exit — or if the walking is the point.
