The corridor stretches past counting. Each door a different grain, a different weight. Mara runs her fingers along the wood — oak, pine, something that might be ironwood, something that hums when she passes.
Behind the first: a kitchen in Lisbon, steam rising from a pot she never learned to season. The man at the table laughs at a joke she hasn't told yet.
Behind the second: a laboratory, the smell of ozone and old coffee. Her hands steady over a microscope, naming something no one has named before.
Behind the third: a quiet room, a child's breathing, the particular hush of 3 a.m. when love is only presence.
She does not open them. The handles turn cold under her palm, then warm again. The corridor has no end she can see, and no beginning she remembers. She walks, and the walking is the choosing.
