The Archive of Almost
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
The librarian catalogues what never happened. A marriage proposal swallowed mid-sentence. The letter written, folded, never mailed. The hand that reached across the table and stopped, fingers hovering over cold porcelain.
Each almost gets a card. Dewey decimal of the heart: 813.54 Regret, 306.73 Cowardice, 155.9 Timing.
She files them in drawers that smell of dust and dried ink. The almost-kiss between Clara and Tomas, 1998, autumn, the train platform — goes beside the almost-goodbye between a father and daughter, 2003, hospital parking lot, the engine still running.
No one visits. No one asks. But sometimes, late at night, she pulls a card and reads the words aloud, just to hear what silence sounds like when given a voice.
