The Archivist's Index
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
She catalogued the ways people left: the door that never latched, the letter stopped mid-sentence, the tea gone cold beside an empty chair. Each departure earned its card — date, manner, weight of what remained. The drawer labeled "Returned" held only dust. The drawer labeled "Never Left" was fuller than she liked to admit: a fingerprint on a mug, a crease in the sofa cushion, the particular silence after a name is spoken and no one answers. She filed them all with the same steady hand, as if order could make the absence less absolute. But the index grew, and the drawers stuck, and one morning she found her own name written in a script she didn't recognize, dated tomorrow, manner: quiet.
