The Cartographer's Error
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
Eli traced the blue line with a fingertip worn smooth by paper. The river had a name — Willow Creek, the survey notes said, perennial — but the ground beneath his boots held only dust and the bleached ribs of cottonwood. Thirty years since the last gauge reading. Thirty years since the aquifer dropped below the streambed and the water simply stopped coming.
He checked the coordinates again. The map was not wrong, exactly. It was patient. It waited for the world to catch up to its memory of water.
A lizard darted across the dry channel. Somewhere upstream, a well pump coughed and caught. Eli folded the map, tucked it into his pack, and sat on a sun-warmed boulder to wait for the monsoon. The river would return, or it wouldn't. The map would still be here, holding its blue line like a promise.
