The Cartographer's Error
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
Eli found the river on the 1847 survey where no water had run in sixty years. The map called it Mill Creek, blue ink bleeding into the paper's grain, but the ground held only stone and the memory of stone. He knelt in the dry bed, fingers tracing the channel the water had carved before the mill burned and the drought came and the name outlived the thing it named.
His compass needle trembled. North was north, but the land had forgotten the map's certainty. Somewhere upstream, a spring still remembered its course, pushing dark through limestone, patient as breath held too long. Eli waited. The paper in his pack would not change. The creek might.
