The Clockmaker's Apprentice
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
The gears remembered what the clockmaker forgot. Each tooth held a whisper of his hesitation — the morning he set the mainspring too tight, the evening he left the escapement un-oiled. His apprentice, a girl named Mara who counted heartbeats instead of seconds, learned to read the metal's complaints. She heard the mainspring's groan at three a.m., the escape wheel's stutter at noon. The clocks did not tell time; they told the story of the hands that made them. When the master died, she did not wind them. She let them run down, one by one, until the shop held only the silence between ticks — the only honest time there is.
