The Day Nurse in 3F
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
Elena arrives at 6:55 with coffee steam curling against the cold glass. She reads the night report — Mara's handwriting, precise as EKG traces: 302 restless, 304 sleeping, 306 crying in her sleep again. The corridor wakes different for day shift: call lights blooming, families arriving with flowers and fear, the kitchen cart clattering like a parade. Elena checks 306 first. The woman's daughter sits in the vinyl chair, holding a cooling cup, rehearsing what to say when her mother wakes. Elena has seen this rehearsal a hundred times. She brings warm blankets, adjusts the morphine, says the right things without scripts. At 11:00 the surgeon rounds, all confidence and jargon. At 14:00 the light shifts, gold through the west windows, and 302 finally asks for water. Elena holds the straw. This is the work: witness, wait, witness again. She charts in the same neat hand. The night nurse will read it.
