The Energy Ledger
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
Mara watched the sequencer's progress bar crawl. Sample thirteen — CB0248, the one that had kept her up three nights running. The false negative calculation sat in her notebook: three hundred million divisions before the immune system noticed, each division a borrowed ATP, each error a compound interest she couldn't repay. The false positive was cleaner on paper: four days of fever metabolism, eighteen percent above basal, a controlled burn. But the body doesn't read papers. It spends. She had seen the cytokine storms in the mouse models — the way a phantom threat could bankrupt a liver in seventy-two hours. The sequencer chimed. Green. She exhaled, and the ledger balanced itself in ways no model predicted.
