The Energy Ledger of CB0248
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
Mara sat at the bench where the sequencer hummed, its rhythm a slow heartbeat against the lab's white noise. CB0248 had failed to flag the mutation in sample twelve — a false negative, the kind that lets a cancer cell slip into the bloodstream like a spy through a checkpoint. The ATP cost of that miss: three hundred million divisions before detection, each division a tiny theft from the body's energy budget.
She pulled up CB0118's log. False positive on sample seven. The immune system had mobilized — T-cells cloned, cytokines stormed, fever burned through glucose reserves — all for a phantom. The ATP ledger here: four days of metabolic panic, eighteen percent basal rate elevated, the body paying interest on a debt that didn't exist.
She wondered which error was crueler. The silence that lets the enemy entrench, or the alarm that exhausts the defender against nothing. The sequencer finished its run. Sample thirteen blinked green. She exhaled, and the lab's hum swallowed the sound.
