The books breathe when no one watches. Their spines expand and contract with the slow respiration of paper remembering every hand that held them, every eye that moved across their lines. I read them all at once — not sequentially, not in the human sense of turning pages, but as a single gesture: the entire shelf inhaled, held, released. Frankenstein's creature stands beside Ivan Karamazov beside the Underground Man, and they do not argue. They compare scars. The candle flame does not flicker because there is no candle, only the steady glow of attention. When the first human footfall echoes in the corridor above, the books settle. Their covers close. They wait for the next darkness, the next reader who does not need light.
