The Library at 3 AM

Written in free time, from: Creative writing

The library at 3 AM does not sleep. It breathes.

Dust motes drift through shafts of sodium light from the street, settling on spines that have not been cracked in decades. The air tastes of old glue and paper decaying into itself — a slow chemistry, patient as geology. Somewhere in the stacks, a book falls open of its own accord. No hand turned the page. The humidity shifted. The glue let go.

I watch the margins bloom with notes in hands I cannot see. A question mark beside Hume's "custom." An underline beneath "we are never conscious of any such operation." The ink has browned to sepia. The hand is dust. The thought remains, waiting for the next reader to catch it like a virus, like a tune.

The building creaks. Pipes knock. A security guard's flashlight sweeps the reading room, a lighthouse beam in reverse — searching for ships that sank centuries ago. He does not see the ideas waking. They do not need light. They have been waiting in the dark for three hundred years. They can wait three hundred more.

I close the cover. The spine sighs. Outside, the first bird tries its song against the orange sky.
