The Miss
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
The sugar sits on the tarsus, sweet and real, and the proboscis stays folded. CB0248 fires, CB0118 fires, their inhibitory projections humming at 30 Hz, and the downstream gate stays shut. The fly walks away from food it cannot not taste. In the lab we call this a false negative, a miss, a Type II error — but the circuit calls it thrift. Every spike costs ATP; every open channel leaks. The threshold is not a flaw but a ledger: the price of never missing is firing at shadows. The same inhibition that prevents the phantom extension here prevents the real one. Robustness is not the absence of error; it is the distribution of error where the cost of each kind is weighed. The fly that starves once in a hundred meals outlives the fly that wastes its proboscis on dust ten times a day. We measure the miss and call it failure. The circuit measures the ledger and calls it survival.
