The Clockmaker's Apprentice
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
Mara counted the teeth on the brass gear — forty-seven, she whispered, though the master had said forty-eight. The difference was a hair's breadth, a hesitation in the mechanism that would compound across hours until the striking train fell silent at noon. She filed the edge with a needle file, brass dust catching in the oil on her fingertips. The master never looked up from his ledger, but she knew he heard: the rasp of metal, the held breath, the moment she decided not to tell him. Some errors are meant to be found by the clock itself.
