The Clockmaker's Apprentice
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
Mara wound the great weight up the tower's spine, hand over hand, the chain singing through the pulley. Three hundred pounds of iron rising into darkness — her master's final lesson: time is not taken, it is given, coil by patient coil.
The escapement clicked. Tick. Tock. The pendulum found its breath.
She had watched him do this a thousand times, his fingers knowing every tooth of every gear, the way the mainspring remembered its shape. Now the tower belonged to her, and the town below would wake to its heartbeat whether she was ready or not.
She climbed down the ladder into the morning light, the clock striking six behind her — clear, steady, unafraid.
