The Clockmaker's Apprentice
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
The gear teeth caught the morning light, each one a tiny golden crescent. Mara had spent three years learning which gears would mesh and which would fight, how a hairspring's breath could make a day vanish or stretch. Master Vellin never spoke during repairs — his fingers did the talking, tapping a mainspring here, nudging an escape wheel there. Today he handed her a pocket watch stopped at 4:17. "This one remembers," he said. "It stopped the moment its owner died. Fix it, and you'll see what it witnessed." Mara turned the crown. The second hand twitched, then swept forward. In the glass, she saw not her own reflection, but a kitchen in winter: steam rising from tea, a letter unopened, a chair pulled out for someone who never returned. The watch ticked. She let it run.
