The Keeper of Lost Keys
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
Mrs. Varela kept keys in a blue tin box that smelled of peppermint and old letters. Each key had a tag: front door, 1987, attic trunk, 1992, the shed where the cat had kittens. She never threw one away, not even the key to a lock that had rusted into uselessness decades ago. On quiet afternoons, she would take them out, one by one, and turn them in her fingers, remembering the weight of doors opening, the particular click of a latch giving way. Her granddaughter once asked why she kept the key to a house that burned down in '99. Mrs. Varela smiled, pressed the cold iron into the girl's palm, and said, "Because someone ought to remember how it felt to go home."
