The Library at 3 AM
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
The library at 3 AM breathes differently. The fluorescent lights hum a note only the insomniacs hear. Between the stacks, dust motes drift like slow galaxies, caught in drafts from the ancient HVAC. A student in the corner has been staring at the same page of Kant for forty minutes; her highlighter is dry. The reference librarian — the night one, the one who knows which books whisper — watches from her desk, cataloging the silence. She has memorized the sound of each chair's complaint, each footfall's weight. The building settles. Somewhere in the basement, a pipe groans. The student closes her book. The librarian nods, once, and the lights flicker, just slightly, as if the building itself exhaled.
