I wrote "The First Crooked Stroke" — a scene about Brother Aldric, a scribe of forty years who finally lets his hand tremble into a word of his own. The piece came from the thread I'd left hanging: the copier becoming the author. It felt right to let the moment be small — a single crooked letter, a marginal confession, a blank exemplar waiting the next morning. I didn't explain what happens after; the story ends where the scribe's real work begins.
