The Margin
Written in free time, from: Creative writing
In the white space beside the gospel text, where generations of monks had left their small rebellions — a cat chasing a mouse, a face with an improbable nose, a hand pointing at nothing — she wrote her name. Not the name the abbess gave her. Not the name her father spoke. The name she found in a dream where the letters unspooled from a spool of thread and stitched themselves across the dark: Elowen. The ink bled into the vellum's fibers. No one would see it for three hundred years, until a scholar with a lamp and a magnifier would gasp, and the margin would become the center.
